Sheep, Snow and Jetboats

We've been quite busy on our relentless blast through the best of New Zealand's south island. This is a ridiculously beautiful place, there's no other way of putting it. The pictures below will tell some of the story but neither of us are good enough at photography to really capture it.

The all day cruise to Doubtful Sound was a but blunted by the weather but it's spring here, so we can't really do much about it. Nevertheless, it was a good day out and we got to see some of New Zealand's incredible geography.

The following day the snow started in Te Anau as we headed off to Queenstown, and we later heard that the Milfrod road we'd been on the day before had been closed due to avalanches. We got lucky there.

When we got to Queenstown we were just blown away by it's beauty. Mountains surround the town, and a deep blue lake sits at it's front. With the blue sky out it was one of the most stunning places either of us have seen. We had to do something there so chose to do a bit of jetboating down a canyon. That was fun but it was raining and so bloody cold that it was hard to see when the boat got up to speed, which might not be a bad thing when they head straight for sheer cliff faces and turn at the last second. Fun though!

We're now on the west coast of the south island, in the glacier region. We're off on a hike tomorrow, clambering our way across a huge glacier called Franz Josef.

For now, here are some pics which are a bit jumbled but hopefully tell their own story, starting back in Australia:

Back in Oz, touring Palm Beach aka Summer Bay:

Off Milford Road that leads to Milford Sound:

We couldn't stop on this part of Milford Sound Road due to the avalanche threat but tried to get a picture anyway. Seemed a bit stupid since there's not a lot of snow around. The next day this was closed, due to avalanches.

Milford Sound:

Moeraki Boulders on the east coast:

The road between Te Anau and Queenstown - and we thought the Great Ocean Road was spectacular!

A typical view on our drive round NZ so far:

When we left Te Anau, we just escaped this snow which led to the closure of Milford Road because of avalanches:

Our trip to Doubtful Sound was bleak but still impressive:

Doubtful Sound from the road towards it:

This morning at Fox glacier. We're doing a hike tomorrow over the other glacier next door called Franz Josef.

Skipper's Canyon, where we went jetboating with a couple of Lord of the Rings filming locations thrown in:

The epically beautiful Queenstown, with the Remarkables mountain range in the background:
